Mrs. Silapasuai Rawisaengsun, Permanent Secretary for the BMA, revealed measures for controlling and organizing of fresh markets and flea markets to reduce the spread of COVID-19 that 50 district offices were directed to inspect market owners and market stall vendors in their responsible areas to take care of sanitation in the markets according to health and sanitation guidance for markets during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak situation and to strictly comply with the BMA’s measures as follows:
For market owners, they are urges to keep updates with situation, learn about how to prevent the spread of the disease. They must provide knowledge and create better understandings among market stall vendors and market staff such as proper way of wearing a face mask and proper hand washing steps. Daily basic COVID-19 screening tests must be provided for all vendors and market staff every day before they begin their works. Any vendors or market staff having a fever, a cough, running nose or difficulty breathing must stop selling and working and immediately seek medical attention. Market must be cleaned with proper ventilation and sanitation. Floors, walkways and stalls must be cleaned at least once a day. Wash basins, clean water, soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizers must be provided. Social distancing of at least 1 meter must be kept during business. Eat-in services at the food court section must be temporarily closed. E-Payment channel must be added as an option for payment in order to reduce chances of contacting bank notes. Proper waste disposal must be conducted to prevent the spread of the disease.
As for vendors, it is suggested that they frequently do hand-washing with soap after using restroom and being in contact with filthy objects and wear face masks during working hours. Any vendors having a fever, a cough, running nose or difficulty breathing must stop selling and immediately seek medical attention. In case of selling fresh meats and organ meats or offal, gripper tools must be provided to customer to prevent them from having a direct contact with the meats and meat vendors must always wash their hands after touching meats and meat products. In case of selling cooked and ready-to-eat foods, the food must be freshly cooked with cover and needed to be reheated every 2 hours. As for meat-based food, the cooking temperature must be at least 70 °C. Food vendors must wear apron and hat or hairnet when preparing food. Vendors and buyers must keep social distancing of at least 1 meter.
As for customers, fabric or surgical face masks should be worn when coming in and using market services. Social distancing of at least 1 meter must be kept between vendors and customers. Customers should wash their hands with water and soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizers after receiving food from vendors and before food consumption. It is recommended to use E-Payment as an option for payment in order to reduce chances of contacting with bank notes.
Moreover, the market’s entrance and exit have been set as a one-way route. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer spots are provided around the market area. The garbage bins are cleaned daily. Vendors and customers must always wear face mask when entering the fresh market.
