Survey on Chaeng Watthana flood risk areas found problem from construction of MRT line

On 26th June 2020, Mr. Sakoltee Phattiyakul, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, and BMA officials had a site visit to survey flood risk areas in Lak Si District and Bang Khen District on Chaeng Watthana road, from in front of Tesco Lotus to Foremost Dairies (Bangkok) Co., Ltd., and from in front of Phranakhon Rajabhat University to Bang Khen Circle. These areas are under the responsibility of Department of Highways and are flood risk areas, together with the construction of MRT Pink Line Project.

From the site visit and walkthrough survey, the team found that while the contractors were working on the improvement of drainage system, they did not inform the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration in advance. Moreover, there is no connection to the existing drain pipes and no pipe dredging or cleaning. As a result, when it rains for only half an hour, flash flood occurs.

Besides, drainage channels were clogged by construction waste and unwanted materials.  The BMA’s Drainage and Sewerage Department, Lak Si District Office and Bang Khen District Office were assigned to work and cooperate with Department of Highways and the contractors to have a walkthrough survey on each and every drain pipe within this week. It is expected that the problem will be solved within 1 – 2 weeks.
